Journal of Onomastics (Namenkundliche Informationen, NI) is an international and interdisciplinary journal dedicated to onomastics. It publishes scholarly research articles, with a particular focus on the field’s intersections with linguistics, literary studies, history, sociology, cultural studies, philosophy and geography. The journal welcomes studies of all categories of names, including personal names and toponyms. Founded in 1964 by Germanists, Slavists and historians in Leipzig, the journal is now published on behalf of the Faculty of Philology of the University of Leipzig. It is the flagship publication of the Gesellschaft für Namenforschung e.V. (GfN), the Society for Name Research.

The Journal of Onomastics is published continuously online in gold open access and is indexed in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Each year’s articles are additionally compiled in a print volume. Publication languages are German, English and French.

All submitted articles first undergo an editorial review by the editorial team and are then peer reviewed by recognized experts in the field. Both the reviewer and the contributor are anonymous (minimum of 2 reviews, double-blind procedure).

The journal is an open-access journal. All contributions are published under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC BY 4.0) license and can be used freely under the terms of the license.

Names, the journal of the American Name Society, is one of the world’s leading journals in the study of onomastics. Since the first issue in 1952, this quarterly journal has published hundreds of articles, reviews, and notes, seeking to find out what really is in a name, and to investigate cultural insights, settlement history, and linguistic characteristics revealed in names.

The NoSo journal is a multidisciplinary, international, open access journal for research studying the role of names in society and in social interaction. It has been published since 2021 by the Royal Gustavus Adolphus Academy for Swedish Folk Culture and is indexed in DOAJ. The journal includes articles on all kinds of names, on historical as well as contemporary data, on different methods and on theoretical as well as practical issues. The scope is Nordic, in the sense that the published research aims to be of relevance for Nordic readers (but must not concern Nordic data or be written in Nordic languages).

Members of the INTERNATIONAL NETWORK FOR PERSONAL NAMES RESEARCH are most welcome to read or submit articles via the journal website.

Nouvelle Revue d’Onomastique (NRO)

The Nouvelle Revue d’Onomastique is a journal of approximately 320 pages gathering articles by researchers from various backgrounds, whose common interest is the study of proper names. Founded in 1983, the journal contains both miscellaneous articles and thematic files (e.g. Breton, Romanic and Slavic onomastics, links with archaeology, dialectology, literary onomastics, etc.), a ‘Review of Journals’ providing an overview of journals published abroad, as well as reports of recent publications. The preferred language is French, but it also hosts texts in German, English, Spanish and Italian.
